Classroom Expectations:
While this class is an elective, it is rigorous and requires focus, dedication, and hard work. It is expected that all students will give 100% during class. There are a multitude of ways for students to continue practicing, researching, and exploring the world of engineering at home as well, but I will try to keep homework to a minimum.
The concepts we will be discussing, learning, and applying are not simple and require a serious investment of mental energy and focus. In order for us to have fun building something, we have to understand the concepts behind its creation first. This means that students will be taking notes, keeping and organized Engineer’s Notebook, and held accountable for all parts of the Design Process.
In addition to the seriousness of the curriculum, it is important that students understand that the materials and computer software we will be working with are not cheap!!! Horseplay, misuse, carelessness, and/or theft will not be tolerated. THERE WILL BE NO EATING OR DRINKING NEAR THE COMPUTERS.
We will also follow these principles in my classroom. The expectations for my classroom listed below are a snapshot of the principles.
· Be Punctual – Be in your assigned seat, on time, everyday. Your DO NOW and objectives will be on the board.
· Be Prepared –You are responsible for your materials and your assignments, if they are not in the class you are not prepared.
· Be Respectful – Name calling, cursing, eye rolling, mumbling under your breath, gum popping, lip smacking, tardiness, and disruptive outbursts are not acceptable or respectful. We must all be respectful of each other and each other’s things. Our classroom is our home away from home, and we should treat it as such.
Grading:
· Projects:
Students will be working on projects throughout the trimester. Projects may be assigned individually, with partners or in groups. Team work is essential when working on projects as projects carry a heavier weight than other assignments!
· Daily Activities/Homework:
Students will be working on activities daily in class and homework will be given as needed. All assignments are expected to be completed to the best of one’s ability, with integrity and turned in by the designated due date. Homework is due at the beginning of the class period!
· Participation:
Students will be expected to participate in class daily! This includes answering/attempting to answer questions and participating in classroom activities.
Students’ participation score will be based on maintaining Engineering Notebook and participation in class.
· Engineering Notebook:
Everyone is expected to have an Engineering Notebook. Students will create this notebook as a class, so it is necessary for all students to have their notebook. GTT classwork is not from the textbook, so it is imperative that students bring their notebook to class everyday as this will include assignment/project handouts, notes, a design log and student’s portfolio of their work. Students will be graded on their Engineering notebook. There will also be informal checks periodically when students will receive points for having their notebook in class. These points cannot be made up!
Grading System:
A 90 - 100%-Excelling-Work meets requirements/students stretches beyond their potential
B 80 - 89%-Meeting-Work meets requirements/achieved potential
C 70 - 79%--Approaching-Work partially meets requirements
D 60 - 69%--Beginning-Work begins to meet requirements
F 0 - 59%--Insufficient Progress-Work is not turned in/does not meet beginning percentage.
Make-up Work:
Students are responsible for ALL work missed when absent. Students need to communicate first with classmates or group-mates to find out what they missed. LASTLY, students can check with me in class. The time limit to submit work would be equivalent to the number of days missed. In the case of extenuating circumstances, I will work with the student and family to negotiate a reasonable solution. I DO NOT GIVE EXTRA CREDIT. Students need to do the work that is missed, not extra work.
If a student was in school but attended a field trip or participated in a school program, the work due is still expected the next day. This means that students should get their assignments from me the day before if at all possible. They should also turn in their current homework in the morning prior to the school function.
Late Work:
Projects and assignments must be submitted when they are due! Many projects are team projects and it hurts your teammates and your presentations!
If your child chooses not turn in an assignment, the following plan will be implemented:
1. Work that is properly done and turned in the following day will receive ONE LETTER GRADE DEDUCTION.
2. Work that is 2 days late will receive TWO LETTER GRADE DEDUCTION.
3. Work that is turned in 3 days or later will receive THREE LETTER GRADE DEDUCTION. The highest grade possible at this point is a C.
